Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Check-In.

Is Check-In a replacement for 911 or emergency services?

No. Check-In is designed for community awareness and information sharing. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, witnessing a crime in progress, or experiencing an emergency, always call 911 first before posting on the app.

What kind of information can I include in a report?

You can select an incident category (e.g., Suspicious Activity, Break & Enter, Fire, Theft), add a written description, pinpoint an exact or approximate location on the map, and upload supporting photo evidence.

Can I post an incident or tip anonymously?

No, but we understand privacy is critical when reporting sensitive local activity. You have total control over how you are presented on the application! You can use your real name, a nickname, or a custom username. However, because our neighbourhoods consist of real, vetted community members, we believe it is most beneficial for everyone to know who is reporting what.

Is my personal address visible to other users?

No. Your exact home address and private account details are never publicly broadcasted. Only the location of the safety pings you intentionally drop on the map will be visible to your local community.

How does Check-In prevent spam, false alerts, or harassment?

Check-In utilizes a combination of community moderation, user verification, and smart reporting filters. Users can flag inaccurate or inappropriate posts, which are reviewed swiftly by the neighbourhood moderators or the Check-In team. Repeat offenders or malicious accounts may be removed to protect the community.

How does Check-In partner with Crime Stoppers of Halton?

Check-In is the official app partner of Crime Stoppers of Halton. This collaboration helps bridge community awareness with established crime-reporting channels, helping keep neighbourhoods safer through proactive collaboration.

Does law enforcement monitor the app?

While local partners and authorities may utilize community insights to better understand local safety trends, Check-In is primarily a peer-to-peer community platform. For formal police reports or investigations, always report directly to your local police service or Crime Stoppers.

Is Check-In free to use?

Yes, the Check-In app is free for community members and neighbourhood residents.

What areas is Check-In currently available in?

Check-In is actively rolling out across Halton Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with plans to expand to additional regions across Ontario and Canada.
